Former SEC Chair Gary Gensler Defends Crypto Crackdown, Highlights Enforcement Against Fraud
Gary Gensler, former chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, has publicly defended his regulatory approach to cryptocurrencies during his tenure. In a CNBC interview, Gensler emphasized the necessity of investor protection, citing approximately 100 enforcement cases initiated under his leadership—a volume comparable to his predecessor Jay Clayton's record.
The ex-regulator pointed to Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX collapse as emblematic of the fraud risks inherent in digital asset markets. While acknowledging each administration brings different priorities, Gensler stood by reforms like shortening the stock settlement cycle, noting European markets now consider similar measures.
